VETERINARY ASSISTANT

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

PREREQUISITES

  • High school diploma or G.E.D
  • Proficiency in English (written and verbal)
  • Hand to eye coordination and finger agility
  • Adequate vision, normal or corrected




PROGRAM HOURS

  • 120 contact hours (90 hours didactic and 30 hours externship)




INSTRUCTOR INFORMATION

  • Qualified Senior Veterinary Technicians or equivalent
  • Practicing in a local office, clinic or hospital




CERTIFICATION
There is currently no certification available for veterinary assistants

  • Program can be used as a stepping stone into the veterinary field
    • Veterinary Assistant > Veterinary Technician > Veterinarian

 

WHAT DOES A VETERINARY ASSISTANT DO?

  • Identified by U.S. Dept of Labor as one of the fasted growing professions!
  • Work with veterinarians and veterinary technicians to provide medical care for sick and/or injured animals
  • Feed, water and examine animals
  • Clean and disinfect cages and work areas
  • Sterilize lab and surgical equipment
  • Under supervision of veterinarian, administer medications orally or topically
  • Provide pre/post operative care.

  • $22,000 - $25,000/year*
