PHLEBOTOMY

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

  • Phlebotomy in relation to healthcare setting
  • Anatomy and physiology in relation to procedures performed by a phlebotomist
  • Phlebotomy equipment
  • Venipuncture and micro collection (skin puncture) procedures and techniques
  • Specimen processing
  • Non-blood specimens
  • Infections control following universal (standard) precautions
  • Proper handling techniques




PREREQUISITES

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Proficiency in English (written and verbal)




PROGRAM HOURS

  • 135 contact hours (60 hours didactic, 35 hours classroom lab and 40 hours externship




INSTRUCTOR INFORMATION

  • Certified Phlebotomist
  • 2 years of clinical experience
  • Abreast with new technologies and the latest industry specific skills and developments in the field




CERTIFICATION

  • Prepares for two national certification exams:
    • Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) exam issued by the National Healthcareer Association or NHA
    • Phlebotomy Technician exam (PBT) issued by the American Society for Clinical Pathology or ASCP
      • This certification requires additional hours of externship and classroom training.  Please be advised that not every location will have this certification available.

 

WHAT DOES A PHLEBOTOMIST DO?

  • Skilled healthcare professionals who collect, transport, handle, and process blood and other specimens
  • Collect specimens by venipuncture or micro collection techniques for laboratory analysis
  • Identify and select equipment, supplies, and other additives used in blood collection
  • Understand factors that affect specimen collection procedures and test results
